Question by Ed P: as a foreigner how can i apply for a university in canada?
ok,im 17, I live in the u.k, have done all my life but im interested in taking up a career in forestry in Canada, and so i’m looking to enroll in a forestry university like UNB. Are my grades that i got in the u.k transferrable? Also if i study forestry in the u.k then are my qualifications transferrable?Oh and another thing, will i need a greencard to study in the USA because on the greencard site it says the u.k isn’t eligible. thanks!

If you want to work in forestry in Canada, it may be better if you do your degree from a Canadian university, as credentials are not always transferable. Your grades from the UK would be used for admission. UNB is a good school.

You don’t need a green card to study in the US. You would have to apply for a study visa. UK residents are eligible for green cards, but are probably not eligible for the green card lottery, which is probably the site you were looking at. As a citizen of the UK, you would have to use a different route for a green card in the US, but that is not necessary for studying there.

To study in Canada, you need to apply for a study visa. Here is a link to the Canadian immigration site which will give you all the information about the process of applying for a study visa. Best of luck with your plans.

Are there many jobs in Toronto Canada?

Question by boonyy: Are there many jobs in Toronto Canada?
I’m thinking about going to school in Toronto, Canada but there’s no way I can afford it with a job. Has anyone tried to get one there? Are there many jobs available. Also, any idea what average housing costs would be for a student? Thanks a bunch!

Ontario is currently in an economic downturn due to closure of several car assembly lines at GM and a decrease in demand in the manufacturing industry. Unless you are looking for work at McDonald’s or Walmart, your job prospects are very slim. Your best bet would be to move to Alberta or British Columbia.

Housing costs…if you can get a large house and share it with 4 or 5 other students, the rent plus utilities will be about $ 500 per month each.

The numbers for August, although still bad, were showing promise of a better year coming up in 2010. Unemployment rate is hovering around 9%.

I guess it all depends in what industry you are in. Since the economy is bad, no one is buying new homes, so the construction market was hurt by that. On the other hand, many people are planning to take advantage of the tax credit for home renovations, and that kept some construction crews busy, such as roofing, paving, deck construction, etc.

Manufacturing is the industry that took the biggest hit. If you work in retail sales or in finance, you probably have a better chance at getting hired right now.
