The numbers for August, although still bad, were showing promise of a better year coming up in 2010. Unemployment rate is hovering around 9%.
I guess it all depends in what industry you are in. Since the economy is bad, no one is buying new homes, so the construction market was hurt by that. On the other hand, many people are planning to take advantage of the tax credit for home renovations, and that kept some construction crews busy, such as roofing, paving, deck construction, etc.
Manufacturing is the industry that took the biggest hit. If you work in retail sales or in finance, you probably have a better chance at getting hired right now.
